Connecticut Forges Stormwater Initiative
New Funding Stream for Conservation Districts

Connecticut’s Council on Soil and Water Conservation, with its conservation partners, revealed a need for conservation districts to become more involved in urban conservation, specifically stormwater.

Partners saw, within this opportunity, a chance for conservation districts to create a new revenue stream to help fund local operations.

The Council on Soil and Water Conservation invited representatives from Connecticut’s Department of Environment Protection’s (DEP) Bureau of Water Management to participate in the discussions. They proposed delegating the job of reviewing the Stormwater Pollution Control Plans, for larger development projects to Connecticut’s five conservation districts.

Meet Me in Montana

Larry Van Rinsum, Resource Conservationist

The Flathead Conservation District would like to welcome NASCA to beautiful northwest Montana for their annual conference! Whitefish is situated in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains and is a mere stone’s throw away from Glacier National Park, the crown jewel of our National Park system. The valley is surrounded by mountains on both sides and is home to Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi.

Flathead County is a very “young” community only being settled in the 1890’s. Vast timber supplies, rich soils and abundant water drew many settlers to the area for logging or agriculture. Over time, changes in silviculture practices have all but shut down industrial timber companies and rapid development of the valley and wild land urban interface have reduced agriculture by 80% in the last decade.

We hope that you will meet us in Montana, September 7-10 and see firsthand the beautiful country that we work to preserve everyday.
